Mentor Onboarding

This onboarding pathway equips Mentors with clarity, confidence, and a shared relational language, ensuring every mentor is prepared to walk alongside youth and families with wisdom, compassion, and integrity.

 

The experience blends relational connection, practical training, and mission alignment, culminating in a shared activation experience that launches each mentor into purposeful service within Northern Star.

Outdoor Learning Activity

Phase 1: Welcome, Alignment & Orientation 

1. Formal Welcome & Acceptance

• Official Serving Appointment Letter

• Role Description & Expectations

 

2. Mission, Vision & Culture Alignment

 

• Founders’ Story & Organizational Origin

• Mission, Vision, Purpose & Culture Code

• Strategic Priorities & Community Impact Focus

 

3. Orientation Class

• Mentor Roles & Boundaries

• Fiduciary Duties: Care & Unity

• Mentorship Structure & Decision-Making Flow 

Phase 2: Certification 

1. Understanding the Role of a Mentor

2. Building Strong Mentor Relationships

3. Supporting Growth and Development

4. Ethics and Professional Conduct

5. Certificate Assessment

◦ Completion of all course modules
◦ Certificate issued upon passing the assessment
◦ Retakes allowed per platform guidelines

Phase 3: Northern Star Onboarding 

Week 1: Understanding Culture in Action

Focus: Observing Leadership Environment

Participants will:

◦ Shadow a live program, meeting, or community initiative
◦ Observe how psychological safety is cultivated
◦ Identify how trust and respect are demonstrated
◦ Note how difficult conversations are handled
◦ Reflect on how values shape real-time decisions

 

Guided Debrief (30 minutes):
Culture, tone, and emotional leadership awareness

 

Week 2: Organizational Awareness & Role Clarity

Focus: Seeing the Whole System

Participants will:

◦ Shadow a planning or coordination meeting
◦ Observe how priorities are set
◦ Identify decision-making frameworks
◦ Understand communication flow between leadership and volunteers
◦ Clarify personal role expectations within the ecosystem

 

Guided Debrief (30 minutes):
Capacity vs. willingness. Role clarity. Accountability structures.

 

Week 3: From Vision to Action

Focus: Applied Leadership Engagement

Participants will:

◦ Participate in a supervised leadership moment
◦ Support facilitation or engagement within a program setting
◦ Practice relational accountability
◦ Demonstrate communication and boundary awareness
◦ Receive live feedback from leadership

 

Final Debrief & Evaluation (45 minutes):
Readiness conversation and next steps
