Who We Are
Northern Star is a nonprofit organization committed to strengthening children, youth, and communities by intentionally building culture.
Our culture is defined by our commitment to being both a light in the dark and a source of direction for the journey ahead. This is not just language; it is the way we live, lead, and serve. We believe lasting change does not come from programs alone, but from a culture rooted in guidance, compassion, responsibility, and shared ownership, where people are supported through every season of life.
We exist because no one is meant to do life alone. As a guiding light in life’s darkest moments and a steady direction for the future, we restore what fragmented systems and culture alone cannot provide: consistent support, trusted relationships, and environments where people are seen, valued, and equipped to thrive. Through both care and guidance, we help people not only move forward, but build lives that last, transforming individuals, families, and communities from the inside out.
“We don’t just run programs, we walk with youth through healing, expression, connection, and leadership.”
Our Mission
Northern Star exists to unite individuals and community systems to provide grief support and transformational mentoring, integrating creativity and equipping youth with tools that build social and emotional strength, ensuring that no one navigates life alone.

Our Vision
We envision thriving communities where every child and youth is seen, supported, and equipped to flourish. Where healing through grief support restores hope, mentoring strengthens identity, creativity unlocks voices and possibilities, while equipping them with the tools to grow socially and emotionally strong.
In these communities, isolation is replaced with belonging, fragmentation with collaboration, and lasting change is built together across generations.
Our Culture in Practice
At Northern Star Foundation, culture is not aspirational; it is operational.
Being a light in the dark and a source of direction for what’s ahead is how we show up, make decisions, and walk alongside individuals and families in their most meaningful and vulnerable moments.
Our work is anchored in two flagship programs: Grief Support and Foster Care Mentoring. Through structured grief care for children and youth navigating living loss, anticipatory loss, and life transitions, and through consistent, relational mentoring that builds identity, resilience, and emotional strength, we create spaces where healing and growth happen side by side.
These aren’t just programs we offer. They are commitments we live out daily, shaping safe circles, strengthening foundations, and helping individuals move from surviving to building what lasts.
Our Pillars in Practice
Grief
We acknowledge loss, trauma, and life’s disruptions with honesty and care. Through activities that promote healthy self-expression, the cultivation of safe, therapeutic relationships, and guided reflection practices that help individuals process and make meaning of their grief, we create spaces where pain is validated, and identity is separated from traumatic experience. Healing is nurtured with patience and dignity, never rushed or minimized.
Mentoring
We invest in consistent, trusted relationships that anchor identity and guide individuals through intentional stages of growth. Through mentorship, personalized development pathways, and future-readiness formation, individuals build the character, competence, and confidence needed to lead themselves well, cultivating leadership and sustaining transformation long after the program ends.
